Quick Chemical Guide : Chlorine pools

  1. Vacuum the pool floor.
  2. Backwash the filter or clean the cartridge.
  3. Check and adjust the pH to 7.4.
  4. Shock dose the pool using shock chlorine granules.
  5. Add Long Life Algaecide or Summerclear.
  6. Test pH and chlorine levels daily. Adjust pH and add stabilised chlorine as required.
  7. Shock dose the pool weekly, after heavy use ("pool parties"), at the first sign of green water, or before going on holiday.

Notes & Hints

  • Filters should run for a minimum of 8 hours per day. You cannot over-filter a pool. The more filtration you provide, the clearer the water will remain.
  • Sand filters should be backwashed once per week to remove trapped dirt from the filter media. The sand itself typically only requires replacement every few years.
  • Cartridge filters should be cleaned every other day. For best results, soak cartridges in a dedicated cartridge cleaning solution.
  • At least one new cartridge should be purchased each season.
  • Never mix pool chemicals together.
  • Keep a dedicated bucket and mixing stick solely for pool chemicals. Dilute chemicals fully in warm water before adding them to the pool.
  • Run the filtration system for at least 2 hours after adding chemicals.
    • Sand filters: use Recirculate mode.
    • Cartridge filters: run with the cartridge removed.
  • Carry out water testing regularly, particularly on chlorine pools.

Lack of testing = Inadequate dosing = Green water = Aggravation!

Clearing a Green Pool

  1. Check and adjust the pH to 7.4.
  2. Shock dose with shock chlorine granules using double or triple the normal shock dose.
  3. Run the filter continuously until the pool clears.
  4. Backwash the filter or clean the cartridge every hour.
  5. In severe cases, a 50% water change may be required in addition to the above treatment.

Looking for an Easier Option?

For above-ground pools, we recommend changing from a traditional chlorine system to the PoolSan system.

PoolSan is a non-chlorine water treatment system that typically requires testing and adjustment only once per week, significantly reducing the time and effort required to maintain your pool.

Please contact us for further details. It could save you a great deal of time and effort.
